Beauty Myths: Baby Oil + Iodine = No More Hair?

I’ve started seeing this pop up all over Pinterest, more so now that we’re getting closer to summer.

The pin is a picture of a pair of legs – one leg is hairy, one leg is smooth. It has a caption about how mixing a cup of baby oil with a few tablespoons of iodine, rubbing it all over your leg, then wiping off with a warm wash cloth will remove the hair.

1Tbsp of iodine 2% 1Cup of baby oil Rub your hairy area with the mixture and let set for only 5 minutes. Then gently wipe away with a damp cloth. Viola!!!! NO MORE HAIR!.

I’m really perplexed by how this is being believed by anyone at all. There is nothing in iodine or baby oil that would cause your hair follicle to break down and the hair to fall out. All you’re going to do is stain your skin with the iodine. In fact when I googled the mixture I found out that baby oil and iodine used to be used as a home made self-tanner!

Do yourself a favor and skip this one unless you’re looking to sport the oily oompa loompa look this season ;)
